Superstitions
Superstitions
are irrational, unscientific beliefs of people regarding luck, fear, prophecy. It
rises due to misunderstanding of science, fear, magic and even cultural tradition
or individual experiences. I too had developed a superstition but it backfired
me and I learned that superstitions are of no good and we all must develop
rational thinking.
I had
a football tournament the next day and I hadn’t washed my jersey after my last
tournament. I washed it in the evening and left it to dry in the balcony. The next
day as I was packing for the tournament, I realized that my jersey was wet as
it had rained the previous night. I was already late and didn’t have any other
dry, clean jersey so I packed the wet jersey in a plastic bag. I was feeling
quite uncomfortable in the wet jersey. The first match of the tournament begun
and surprisingly I played like it was the best game I ever played. We won
matches over matches are we eventually won the tournament.
I was
awarded as the best player for the first time. While returning home the only
thing in my mind was my lucky wet jersey. This thing kept happening, whenever I
would wear wet jersey, I would play better than usual. The seed of this belief
was sown deep into my mind. I started wearing wet jersey for every tournament
and even for practice session. I didn’t have the slightest hint of the problems
that were awaiting me. I had practice sessions almost every day and I got
habitual to wet my jersey before a game.
One day
when I returned home from a practice session, I went to have a bath and realized
that there were tiny red spots all over my back. I thought that they would be
some common rash and just ignored it. Overnight I started having itchy and
burning sensation on my back. I told my father about it and he was horrified to
see my back covered with fungal spots. We immediately consulted a dermatologist.
The doctor said that I had fungal infection, that needs to be treated as early
as possible.
I confessed that I frequently used to wear wet jersey as I believed them to be lucky. My parents were very upset on this irrational superstition of mine. From that day onwards I always believed in scientific and rational thinking and understanding the logic, reason behind the things I do rather than blindly following superstition.
